RPA Women’s month leadership series: Melissa Myburgh

At RPA, we celebrate diversity, collaboration and believe that because of our unique contributions, we make a strong and powerful team.  Focussing on Women’s month, August 2023, we asked our management team a few questions about leadership, the role of women in management positions and advice for the younger generation of leaders.

We talk to Melissa Myburgh, Portfolio Manager.

Can you share your thoughts on the importance of resilience and adaptability in leadership, especially when faced with unexpected challenges?

Unexpected challenges are a guarantee in any leadership role. Resilience and adaptability are qualities that every effective leader should possess. These enable leaders to navigate through uncertainties, inspire teams, and drive meaningful outcomes. To be effective, it is imperative that leaders can actively apply these qualities to keep the momentum going to push through to the finish line.

What role does emotional intelligence play in effective leadership, and how do you develop and apply this skill in your management role?

Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in effective leadership as it involves understanding and managing one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. Leaders with high emotional intelligence are better equipped to build solid relationships, communicate effectively, mediate, and manage conflicts, and create a positive work environment. Emotional intelligence is not a static skill because people are not static by nature. To develop and apply this skill, you constantly need to reassess your EI strategy and pay attention to those around you.

As you reflect on Women’s Month, what message would you like to share with other women in management who are working to make a positive impact in their organisations and industries?

Be confident;

Be fierce;

Be unapologetically unique;

Strive for progress not perfection!
